Water Central

Our boat has Water Central under the port settee.  No, really.  It’s where the water tank valves,  the pressurized water pump, and the whole-boat filter are located.  The hoses to the galley sink and head sinks originate here.  It’s also got space for a water heater or a water maker.  Water Central is a happening place.

For the first few months that we were living aboard we noticed that our water tanks had a funny smell when we switched from one to the other.  They are 50 gallons each so it would take us a while to use one up and we just attributed the smell to funky tanks.  Except that we had shocked the tanks with bleach on our initial cleaning trip (one tank was full of 1 year+ water when we bought the boat.  Thanks again, Previous Owner.)  In addition, the tanks were Rhino Lined during the refit so we thought they probably got a bit of a cleaning after.

Yet here was our water, funky and getting funkier.

If you take a look at the first picture you will note that there are a bunch of yellow-orange snaky looking things running around the sides.  Those were our water lines.  Maybe, just maybe, that was the funk origination.

So…  Off to Home Depot we went.  New braided vinyl hose.  Couplings.  A new galley faucet (cause the old one was crap).  Hose clamps.  Tape.  Plumbers putty.  A new whole house/boat filter.  Other stuff.

Back to the boat to try to make sense of it all.

The faucet went in pretty easily.  We installed valves to be able to turn the water off at the faucet if it’s leaking instead of turning off the entire water system.  Smart, I think.

Then came the fun part of running new hose.  Long story short: we (by we I mean my Better Half) did.

The water, not surprisingly, tastes awesome!
